Starting from fall 2025, small and medium-sized businesses that operate outside of Budapest will become eligible for a no-interest loan they can use to modernize their energy infrastructure. If the plan is accepted, almost HUF 40 billion will be distributed in the framework of the Ányos Jedlik Energy Program.
Ányos Jedlik Energy Program
Ányos Jedlik was a 19th century Hungarian engineer and physicist. His most famous invention is the principle of the dynamo self-excitation, creating a new type of generator, but his work also included creating an electric motor and galvanic batteries.
In line with this, the Ányos Jedlik Energy Program focuses on energy efficiency, providing various types of support to Hungarian businesses which want to invest in increasing their energy efficiency. Supported projects involve renewable energy, modern energy storage, and energy efficiency, worth altogether HUF 440 billion (more than EUR 1 billion).
According to a new proposal, HUF 38.7 billion (almost EUR 100 million) may be distributed among small and medium-sized businesses in the form of a no-interest loan to be invested in energy efficiency projects.
Who can apply?
In case the proposal is accepted, applications for the no-interest loan will be possible starting from fall 2025. The loan will be available to small and medium-sized businesses that operate outside of Budapest. Most of this resource should go to businesses operating in the Eastern and Southern regions of Hungary; only 35% may be allocated to Pest County and the counties of the Western and Northern Dunántúl region.
Businesses must undertake to realize at least 30% energy savings as a result of the investment, which can be achieved through various measures, such as:
- upgrading building energy systems,
- upgrading manufacturing processes,
- upgrading logistics, or
- making a complex investment.
The requested no-interest loan may be between HUF 10 and 500 million (ca. EUR 25,000 and EUR 1.25 million), but it requires at least 10% own contribution, and cannot be more than 15 times the last yearly revenue of the business.
Within the program, at least HUF 3 billion (EUR 7.5 million) will be allocated to water utility providers for the upgrade of their equipment.
Availability
For now, the HUF 38.7 billion government support for no-interest loan remains a plan, on which comments are expected until July 20, 2025. If all goes well, the loan becomes available sometime during the fall of 2025. Further details are to be announced.
